Pada awalnya Shorinji Kempo Diciptakan oleh seorang biksu bernama Dharma Taishi yang berasal dari Baramon (India).
Kira-kira tahun 550 SM ia berkelana ke daratan China dan menetap di suatu kuil bernama SIAU LIEM SIE atau lebih dikenal nantinya dengan nama Shorinji. Dalam pengembaraan yang bersifat penyebaran agama ini, Dharma Taishi tak urung mendapatkan ancaman yang bersifat fisik, oleh karena itu dia berpendapat bahwa biksu juga harus melatih ketahanan fisiknya, disamping juga melatih rohaninya. Oleh karena itu dia menciptakan sebuah bela diri yang dikenal dengan Shorinji Kempo atau Siauw Liem Sie Kung Fu.
Shorinji Kempo sendiri dibawa ke Jepang oleh seorang tentara Jepang bernama So Doshin, yang melarikan diri dari pasukannya, ia tidak sepaham dengan cara-cara penjajahan Jepang, kemudian melarikan diri dari induk pasukannya dan mengembara di daratan Cina.
Dalam pengembaraannya ia bertemu dengan pendeta Budha dan akhirnya ia dibawa ke kuil Siaw Liem Sie, yang sudah diperbaiki oleh penerus-penerus Dharma Taishi.
Di kuil ini Sho Dosin mempelajari ilmu Shorinji Kempo langsung dibawah asuhan Mahaguru ke-20 yaitu WEN TAY SUN. Karena kesetiaannya dan penguasaannya yang sempurna terhadap Shorinji Kempo, maka Sho Dosin diberi penghargaan tertinggi menjadi Maha Guru ke - 21 dan ia memperoleh ijin untuk meninggalkan kuil Shorinji untuk meneruskan ajarannya di daratan Jepang.
Tahun 1945, Sho Dosin kembali ke Jepang dan membuka DOJO (tempat latihan) tersendiri. Ia memilih kota TODATSU, yang terletak di propinsi Kagawa di pulau Shikoku, yang kemudian terkenal sebagai pusat Shorinji Kempo. Banyak sekali yang datang ke DOJO-nya untuk menjadi murid di sana, bukan saja dari daerah sekitarnya tetapi juga dari daerah-daerah lainnya, bahkan dari luar Jepang (terutama mahasiswa asing yang belajar di Jepang).
Sho Dosin menggembleng murid-muridnya dengan disiplin yang keras seperti yang dialaminya sendiri. Namun di balik penggemblengan fisik dan mental itu, Guru Besar Shorinji Kempo ini tetap menempatkan seni beladiri ini sebagia pengayom hati dan jiwa dengan penuh rasa damai dan welas asih bagi para pengikutnya.
Sebab itulah lambang organisasi Shorinji Kempo menggunakan lambang agama Budha, yaitu "Manji" , semacam tanda swastika yang berputar ke kiri, yang berarti "kasih sayang dan kekuatan" yang sesuai dengan doktrin Shorinji.
